Early release of one of the new paintings for my cinema-inspired solo show, which opens June 7th at Bottleneck Gallery!

“Can you keep a secret? I’m trying to organize a prison break. I’m looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar. Then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out?” – Lost in Translation (2003)

Yesterday I made a bet with a friend of mine, an amateur film critic who wanted to get more writing done this year. So he’s agreed to write 100 reviews/articles by the end of the year, if I do a 100 film-related illustrations. If one of us flakes out, we owe the other $500. Then again, if we both succeed, nobody owes anything. ;P

UPDATE 1/5/2013: Yo I TOTALLY lost this bet, but the project has not died! It will be the subject of my solo show in June 2013!

After a lot of thinking about how I could refine the project, I decided to do 100 movie poster illustrations. I know poster redesigns are all the rage now, but I don’t mean any redesign or the popular minimalistic interpretation - I mean really involved paintings and illustrations that capture the “essence” of a film, something you don’t normally see in commercial movie posters anymore. Hoping that this project will challenge me artistically this year, and if I succeed I’ll have a really nice collection to add to my portfolio. Plus, it’s fun.

I’ll be posting all completed work along with process shots here, as always. This is a WIP of the first film I chose to do, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It’s all painted from scratch so it still needs quite a bit of refinement, and the text and titles are of course, not at all finalized and are just there for placement. I’m still undecided as to whether to do text at all. Opinions?

SO GUISE at first I thought this was from How to Train Your Dragon 2 but it’s NOT, it’s just footage from a new DVD short called Gift of the Night Fury that went on sale two days ago. HTTYD2 is still in pre-production and won’t be out until at least 2014. (sob)

STILL THOUGH WATCH THIS CLIP because it will still give you ALL THE EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS and aslkfjalsfkf I miss the characters so much, I just had an absolute shit day being sick at home AND THIS- THIS JUST BROUGHT TEARS INTO MY EYES I love them so muchhhh
