Big life decision.
Hey everyone! I hope you’re all doing fabulous. This post is pretty serious actually!! Today, I put in my two weeks’ notice at my current full-time design job, in order to fully focus my personal illustration career. It was a big and scary decision (letting go of a stable income and insurance and all that) but I have been thinking about it for a long time and I think it’s for the best. For months I have wanted to have more time to work on personal projects, to take on more commissions and widen my portfolio - there’s room for so much improvement, and there’s just so many things I want to do, and the job (while great) was taking up a lot of my time.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what exactly my job is/was, so I’ll answer that now. Soon after I graduated RISD (in 2010), I was hired as an artist-designer for a Manhattan-based apparel graphics company - basically, I work under an art director and draw designs for t-shirts and women’s tops, which are then pitched to clients (mostly retailers like Forever21.) It was my first “9-5” job and I was fortunate to get it fresh out of college, and I’m very happy to have the experience. Today marks about a year and half that I spent at that company - and two weeks from now I’ll be on my own!
SO! All that being said - I’ll definitely be posting more art and studies now, taking more commissions, and generally being (even more) active online. I will also be branching out into other types of art and illustration as I figure out what exactly I want to do with my life. I’m really excited and happy and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit frightened, but I think I have a great opportunity to set myself some lofty goals and go after them!! ONWARDS!

This is so inspiring, so many people allow their real life to be buried under a security blanket. Hope it goes well!
